What Is a Visitor Visa

A visitor visa, formally known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official document issued by the Canadian government that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for a temporary stay. Visitors can come to Canada for tourism, to visit family or friends, to attend business meetings or conferences, or for other short-term purposes that do not involve working or studying.

Not everyone needs a visitor visa to enter Canada. Citizens of certain countries are visa-exempt and may instead require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Whether you need a TRV or an eTA depends on your country of citizenship and how you are travelling to Canada.

Eligibility

Who is eligible for a visitor visa?

To be approved for a Canadian visitor visa, you generally need to satisfy an immigration officer that you meet the following requirements.

1. Valid travel document. You must hold a valid passport or other accepted travel document from your country of citizenship.
2. Temporary intent. You must demonstrate that you intend to leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay. This is one of the most scrutinized aspects of visitor visa applications and a leading cause of refusals.
3. Sufficient funds. You must show that you have enough money to support yourself during your visit and to pay for your return trip home.
4. No inadmissibility. You must not be inadmissible to Canada on criminal, medical, security, or other grounds.
5. Ties to your home country. Strong ties to your home country (e.g. employment, property, family, or financial obligations) help demonstrate that you will return after your visit.
6. No intention to work or study. A visitor visa does not authorize you to work or study in Canada. If that is your intention, a different permit is required.
